Silver for the Silver Streak: Shipp falls in IHSA state wrestling title match

Galesburg High School senior Gauge Shipp will bring home a silver medal from the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament. The Silver Streaks senior fell by decision 11-4 to Ty Edwards of Yorkville Christian in the 132-pound Class 2A title match Saturday at State Farm Center in Champaign.

It was the first loss in 47 matches this season for Shipp, the defending state champion at 138 pounds. Edwards took the gold with a final record of 47-2.

Shipp was a combined 96-1 his junior and senior seasons.

Streaks senior Rocky Almendarez lost the third-place match at 120 pounds by a 6-2 decision to Gavin Hanrahan of Antioch. Almendarez finishes the season at 42-3.

A welcome-home rally for Shipp and Almendarez is set for around 1:15 p.m. Sunday at the GHS wrestling center at the former Gale School on West Dayton St. A police and fire truck escort will lead the Streaks from Main Street to Henderson to Dayton to the school.
