A pair of Galesburg Silver Streaks made history Saturday by claiming the first girls state wrestling medals in school history.
Galesburg senior Hannah Almendarez placed fifth at 100 pounds and junior Annalisa Gibbons took sixth at 140 pounds at the Illinois High School Association girls wrestling state finals Saturday at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Almendarez finishes at 23-5 while Gibbons ends her season at 22-7.
The two Streaks were welcomed home with a police and fire truck escort through Galesburg on Saturday night.
Canton’s Kinnley Smith finished second at 125 pounds.
The history-making efforts by Almendarez and Gibbons capped a successful state tourney run for the Galesburg wrestling program. At last week’s IHSA Class 2A boys state finals, Galesburg’s Gauge Shipp finished second at 133 pounds and Rocky Alemendarez claimed fourth at 120 pounds.
