1 dead, another seriously injured in ATV accident in rural Knox County

One man is dead and another seriously injured following a single-vehicle ATV crash Saturday night near Altona.

According to preliminary results released by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, an ATV was traveling through a field and struck an embankment where it came to an immediate stop. The accident occurred at approximately 10:46 p.m. Saturday in the 2800 block of Knox Road 900 East in rural Knox County.

The driver of the ATV, a 25-year-old man from Altona, died as a result of the accident. A passenger, identified as a 19-year-old man from Cambridge, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, and then Life Flighted to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria with life-threatening injuries.

Names of the victims not being released at this time, pending notification of family.

The accident remains under investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team.
