The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved what they termed a “stipulated agreement” that will allow upgrades at a couple railroad crossings on the city’s south side.

They approved the City of Galesburg installing automated train warning devices at crossings on both South Seminary Street, and South Chambers Street.

These crossings were part of $3.5 million worth of work announced last year that also included closing some crossings and some modified flashing lights at others.

In this case, nearly $1 million from the state will pay for 95 percent of the work at the two sets of crossings, while Burlington Northern Santa Fe will pay the rest.

“Improving our state’s existing rail safety infrastructure goes a long way toward reducing collisions and keeping Illinoisians safe alongside train tracks,” said Michael Carrigan, ICC Commissioner, in a state-issued news release. “The ICC recognizes the important role the Grade Crossing Protection Fund plays in helping railroads and local governments complete these critical safety projects.”

The ICC says the work is supposed to be complete within eighteen months.
