Despite one program moving out, Sandburg president still sees need for downtown Galesburg ‘Annex’

The opening of a Science and Technology Center on the Carl Sandburg College main campus in Galesburg meant the Dental Hygiene program would be moving out of the school’s downtown Galesburg Annex building.

But, Sandburg president Seamus Reilly tells WGIL’s Galesburg in Focus there is still a need for that downtown building, especially when it comes to help local residents — employed, unemployed, or inbetween.

“Our plans for the Annex are to create a workforce development-entrepreneurial space there,” said Reilly.  “More to come on this in the future, beginning, hopefully, this semester, with some short-term programs.”

Reilly says he sees the space as good for what he calls “a Main Street, front-door experience” for people.

“We’re hoping to incorporate some other pieces that we have on campus, and then eventually grow that space to accommodate people downtown who want to take a, maybe, a class at lunchtime, or a class at 5:00 on Microsoft Excel because you want to want to learn how to go pivot tables, or you want to learn QuickBooks,” said Reilly.

Listen to our full interview with Seamus Reilly this Saturday at 8:15am on WGIL’s “Galesburg in Focus” program.
