The Galesburg Area Vocational Center is getting the word out about what it offers in career and technical education.
So much so that director Adam Seaney says there are at least 100 more students this year than last — representing many of the schools they serve including Galesburg.
Seaney tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL he means it when he says the word is getting out.
“I try my hardest to be a walking, talking GAVC billboard as much as I can,” said Seaney. “I think we do some great things for students. I think career and technical education as a whole provides some excellent opportunities for students. (I try to) just getting it out there – whether it’s going to (schools) talk about it, whether it’s coming in (to WGIL) to talk about it, whether it’s bringing people through our center.
Seaney says those students will get a chance to talk with people from business and industry later this month, when they host their annual manufacturing and trades showcase.
“Think kind of a career fair or college fair. That’s kind of the set up,” said Seaney. “We encourage our industry partners to have some hands-on opportunities for our students to participate in, and a lot of them do. It’s just a really neat day for our industry partners to get in front of our students, and our students to get in front of our industry partners.”
About three dozen potential advisors and employers are expected to attend. Last year, Seaney says 27 industry partners representing most of the areas the center teaches courses were exposed to an estimated 1,500 students.
The showcase is scheduled for October 31.
