Monmouth council approves more help for Midwestern Pet Foods expansion

The Monmouth City Council has approved the next piece of the puzzle in what is resulting in an expansion of the Midwestern Pet Foods plant.

Council members this week approved a redevelopment agreement, which allowed the company to tear down three homes in the area of the plant that they say will allow them to improve semi traffic around the plant, and have more loading docks.

“This is actually the third project that we’ve had with them,” said Lew Steinbrecher, City Administrator.  “They had a major expansion where they completely removed the roof off the kibble plant, and installed several million dollars worth of new processing equipment inside the plat, and, of course, a new roof to cover it up.”

Steinbrecher tells WGIL the third of those expansion projects resulted in the demolition of the old Western Stoneware facility.

“They are also now in the process of a major warehouse expansion to include an increasing number of shipping docks, and the storage of finished pet food products,” said Steinbrecher.  “They are continuing to grow, and they’ve really become a very major, meaningful employer here in the Monmouth community.”

Steinbrecher says with most of the company’s expansion money going to Monmouth in recent years, Midwestern Pet Foods is becoming an even better employer in the community.

The city council also approved zoning changes for the parcels demolished, moving them from Residential to Manufacturing.
