Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson says he just wants to continue thanking local veterans.

That’s why Erickson, through the Recorder’s office, is reviving what he calls an “Honor Rewards” program.

“That program allows our veterans in the community to be able to sign up, they’ll get a little I.D. card with their name and picture on it, and they can take that to vendors, businesses, restaurants in the community, and get a discount,” said Erickson, to WGIL’s “Galesburg in Focus” program.

Erickson says the discounts could be on almost any good or service.

“Whether it’s free French fries, or ten percent off an oil change, or different things in the community…kind of things to help say, ‘Thank you for your service to our country,'” said Erickson.  “It helps generate business back to the businesses.”

Veterans who want to get an Honor Rewards, or businesses who want to offer something to the veterans, are asked to contact his office.  The program is also available online.

The cards often also work in other communities like in the Peoria area, where the Tazewell County Recorder has a similar program. Honor Rewards is also available through the Fulton County Recorder.

Erickson says he admits the program got neglected a little bit when the office transitioned away from being separate than his, but he says now is a good time to revive it.
