UPDATED 5:34 a.m. 10/17/24

As many as 400 Ameren Illinois customers were left in the dark, and possibly without business, for the better part of two hours Wednesday afternoon.

Power went out at approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Galesburg, causing many businesses to at least temporarily close, or, in our case, go off the air for a period of time.

The power was restored at 5:30, and we saw crews working on an underground transformer near Allen Chapel AME Church.

Tucker Kennedy, an Ameren spokesperson, confirms a malfunctioning transformer was to blame.  Power was able to be “restored by switching to another power source,” said Kennedy.

Power then went out overnight in downtown Galesburg around 2:00 a.m. Thursday for several hours, while a more permanent fix for the outage was worked on.
