A Galesburg man is getting what is termed a “second chance” after being arrested earlier this month as part of a trio who threw concrete and antifreeze on passing cars.
Court records indicate Hayden Herschelman, 19, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning as part of an agreement to counts of Theft and Criminal Damage to Property.
In exchange, other felony charges were dropped, Herschelman was sentenced to pay restitution, do 30 hours of community service, and serve two years of what’s called “second chance probation.”
Essentially, that’s probation for someone who didn’t previously have a criminal record. If successfully completed, the conviction is removed from their record.
That’s otherwise similar to the sentence Mason Stone, 20, received last week when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of Theft.
Herschelman, Stone, and Grant Oyler, 19, all were arrested in late-February after after stealing antifreeze that they then threw along with concrete on to passing cars from overpasses at Interstate 74 and U.S. 34, causing a number of cars to be damaged.
Oyler is scheduled to be in court for a plea hearing in less than two weeks.
