A Kewanee man is in custody in the Henry County Jail after being charged with animal cruelty, domestic battery and methamphetamine possession.

On Monday, Kewanee Police Department officers responded to a call regarding a suspected incident of animal cruelty at an apartment in the Lakeland Terrace complex. Officers met with the complainant, who provided video evidence of extreme acts of violence by Brandon Adams, a resident of the apartment.

According to police, video footage revealed Adams grabbing an eight-week-old puppy by the throat, appearing to choke it, and then handling it violently by its legs before dropping it to the floor. Adams was also seen picking up the puppy by its head or neck and forcefully throwing it into a couch.

According to a police spokesperson, there were no significant injuries to the puppy.

Police said further review of the footage showed Adams assaulting his girlfriend earlier in the day.

Upon investigation, officers discovered that Adams was also in possession of methamphetamine at the time of the arrest. Adams was taken into custody and eventually transported to the Henry County Jail.

On Tuesday, the Henry County State’s Attorney’s Office formally charged Adams with Animal Cruelty (Class A Misdemeanor), Domestic Battery (Class A Misdemeanor), and Possession of Methamphetamine (Class 3 Felony). The Class 3 Felony carries a potential sentence of 2 to 5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
