Second suspect arrested in conjunction with summer downtown Galesburg shooting. One remains in custody

The second of two men wanted for attempted for attempted murder in conjunction with a downtown Galesburg shooting this summer has been arrested.

The incident occurred just before midnight on July 6 in the first block of South Cherry Street. On arrival, officers located a male gunshot victim in the roadway. The victim was identified as Mario D. Washington. Washington was treated on scene and eventually transported to OSF St. Francis in Peoria. According to Galesburg Police, the victim survived and continues to receive treatment for the injuries sustained.

After an extensive investigation by the Galesburg Police Department — with the assistance from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County State’s Attorney, Illinois State Police, Illinois Secretary of State Police, and the FBI TOC West Task Force — two subjects were identified as suspects involved in the shooting. The probe resulted in attempted murder arrest warrants being issued for Gregory O. Wallace, age 39, and James M. Wilson, age 43.

On Wednesday, Wilson turned himself in, accompanied by his attorney, at the Galesburg Public Safety Building, and later taken to the Knox County Courthouse where a first appearance hearing was held. Due to the provisions of the pretrial fairness act, Wilson was ordered to be released by the court.

Wallace was apprehended Oct. 22 in Chicago by the FBI Fugitive Task Force and the Chicago Police Department. Upon completion of the hearing, Wallace was then taken to the Knox County Jail where he remains custody. It was originally reported that Wallace had been released. A preliminary hearing has been set for 2 p.m. Dec. 16.
