Standout Streaks: Meet the Galesburg Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Four former Silver Streaks, a pair of standout boys swimming relay teams and a respected custodian represent the Galesburg Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

The new Hall of Fame members that will be inducted during Saturday’s ceremony are:

  • Grant Gibson (2015), Individual
  • Amanda Gunther (2003), Individual
  • Shannon Stacey (2007), Individual
  • Todd Peterson (1981), Veteran
  • Mike Westfall, Friends of Athletics
  • 2005-06 200 & 400 yard freestyle relay teams for boys swimming

 

The five individuals and two relay teams will be enshrined at an induction ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday in the GHS Hegg Performance Arts Center. This celebration will be taking place in conjunction with the Girls & Boys Basketball Thanksgiving Tournaments. At the conclusion of the induction ceremony, inductees will be introduced between the boys and girls Thanksgiving tournament games.

 

Grant Gibson

Gibson was an all-state basketball player for the Silver Streaks, finishing his career with 1,817 points, second to only Joey Range (2,390) in career scoring.

He was a four-year starter, and three times earned Western Big 6 All-Conference and all-state honors.

Gibson also is the fifth all-time leading scorer in WB6 Conference history. He went on to play two years at Parkland College, helped the team place fourth and fifth at nationals. He also played two years at Roosevelt University where he lead the team to its first ever national tournament appearance.

 

Amanda Gunther

Gunther was a standout girls basketball player for the Streaks during Galesburg’s run of state tournament appearances. She played on four state tournament teams and was honorable mention all-state her senior season. She also earned all-WB6 honors in basketball.

Gunther also was a two-time state qualifier in tennis. She also played soccer.

Other awards for Gunther included the Spark Burgland Athletic Achievement Award, Jason Wessels Inspirational Award, and the Amy Crisman Award for Excellence in Basketball.

She attended Drake University where she was a Presidential Scholarship recipient all four years.

 

Shannon Stacey

Stacey earned eight varsity letters while making her mark mark in cross country, track and tennis for the Silver Streaks.

Stacey was a four-time state qualifier in track and field, earning three medals. She is the school record holder in the 800.

In cross country, Stacey qualified twice for state. She held school records in the 5,000 meter at Lake Story and the 3-mile at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Stacey attended Brown University on a Ivy League academic scholarship, graduating in 2011 with a degree in biomedicine. She also competed in cross country and track at Brown.

 

Todd Peterson

Peterson was a standout in football and wrestling for Galesburg. He was a lineman for the 1980 football team that went undefeated in the Western Big 6 Conference while compiling an 8-1 regular season record. The Streaks lost to Belleville East in the first round of the state playoffs. He was honorable mention all-WB6.

Peterson earned three varsity letters in wrestling for Galesburg, advancing to state in 1981.

He was a four-time letterwinner in both football and wrestling at Monmouth College. He earned All-American honors as a wrestler for the Fighting Scots.

 

Mike Westfall

Westfall is a longtime custodian responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of Thiel Gym, VanDyke Field, and anything else sports related. A former coach describes Mike “as someone who makes coaches’ lives easier everyday.”

 

Boys swimming 200, 400 free relays

Galesburg’s 200 free relay team of David Anderson, Ian Boydstun, Devon Boydstun and Chris Gordon finished second in the state in 2005-06. The same team members took eighth in state in the 400 free relay for Coach John Willy. The team finished ninth in the overall team standings, the highest finish ever for a Streaks swim team.

The foursome ranked 23rd nationally in the 200 free relay and 64th nationally in the 400 free relay, meeting All-American Standards in both. They also set team and sectional records in both events, and were conference and sectional champions.
