Galesburg firefighters honored for lifesaving heroism at 2024 awards

Several Galesburg firefighters were recognized Tuesday at the 2024 Annual Firefighter Awards Ceremony at Central Station for their lifesaving actions and dedication to the fire service.

Firefighter Nick Morrissey was named 2024 Firefighter of the Year for rescuing a woman trapped in a basement during a 2024 residential fire, alongside his work maintaining the water and ice rescue program, training new recruits in rapid intervention team (RIT) skills, serving on the pension board, and improving his shift.

Morrissey, Fire Captain Justin Moffitt, and Firefighter Tyler Brackett also received the Galesburg Fire Department Unit Citation Award for the same rescue and will be honored with the OSFM Firefighter Excellence Award at the 32nd Annual Firefighting Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony in Springfield.

Fire Captain Kyle Harms, Firefighter Josh Webber, and Firefighter Kyle McGee earned the Galesburg Fire Department Unit Citation Award for rescuing individuals from a burning balcony and apartment during a 2024 structure fire. They will receive the OSFM Firefighter Unit Citation Award in Springfield.
