Robert C. “Bob” Hummel, age 89, of Knoxville, Illinois, died at 2:17 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg, Illinois with his wife by his side.
He was born on June 9, 1935, in Lisbon, Iowa, the son of Chris and Jessie (Reiger) Hummel. He was raised and educated in Lisbon and Dixon, Illinois. He married Thelma G. Schafer on June 9, 1956, in Dixon, Illinois. He served in the United State Army.
Surviving is his wife Thelma of Knoxville, Illinois; three children: James R. Hummel (wife Kelley) of Long Groves, Iowa, Chirstine S. Hummel of Knoxville, Illinois, David A. Hummel (wife Jennifer) of Knoxville, Illinois; five grandchildren: Savanah Hummel, Noah (Abbey) Hummel, Katelyn (Jack Connors) Hummel, Bryce Theobald and Faithlynn Thomas; two great grandsons: Griffin and Rowan Hummel; his brother, Wayne Hummel of Dixon, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, one great grandson Paxton, two brothers Charles Hummel and Paul Hummel.
He worked as an over the road trucker for the former Admiral and Maytag, then for the former Kleine Equipment, then retiring from Birkey’s at the age of 80. He collected toy trucks and tractors. He enjoyed time with his family, working outside, keeping his yard and landscaping pristine. He was a member of the Knoxville United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Knoxville, Illinois, with Rev. David Mustain officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Illinois, with military rites conducted by the Knox County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the Knoxville United Methodist Church.
