The City of Galesburg on Monday agreed to purchase of four parcels on the northeast corner of the Public Square and 6.6 acres near Bunker Links Municipal Golf Course, aiming to advance downtown revitalization and enhance city parkland.

Aldermen approved the Public Square purchase 5-0, with Ward 1 Alderman Bradley Hix abstaining and Ward 2 Council member Evan Miller not in attendance. The Bunker Links land purchase was approved 6-0.

City Manager Eric Hanson discussed the acquisitions on WGIL’s Galesburg’s Morning News, noting their role in securing control over key properties for future development.

The Public Square parcels, owned by Michael L. and Karen K. Martin, Martin Brothers Developers, Inc., and Public Square Properties, LLC, will be acquired through the forgiveness of $300,000 in debt from a 2018 city loan for utility and road improvements on Gale Village Drive on the north end of the city, near Aldi and McAlister’s.

Hanson highlighted the parcels’ importance, noting they provide control of the land around the square, a “signature piece of our downtown” critical for potential projects like a hotel or major structure.

He noted the acquisition aligns with the City’s ongoing efforts to strategically invest in properties that support community development and revitalization goals.

The 6.6-acre parcel just west of Bunker Links, owned by the Marjory H. and Albert J. Novotny Trusts, will be purchased for $63,000 from the Economic Development Fund, prompted by a 1990s easement’s right of first refusal. While no specific plans exist, Hanson described the land as valuable for expanding Lincoln Park near the fishing ponds or supporting Bunker Links. The acquisition offers flexibility for park or golf course enhancements.
