Galesburg offers cooling centers to beat heat wave

With a heat advisory set to begin at noon on Saturday, forecasting heat index values near 105, Galesburg is offering cooling centers to protect residents from dangerous heat and humidity.

The Knox County Emergency Management Agency warns that the elderly and young are most at risk for heat-related illnesses, such as nausea, dizziness, heavy sweating, or headaches, which can lead to serious injury or death if untreated. For symptoms like vomiting or loss of consciousness, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Cooling centers include:

  • Galesburg Public Library, 264 W. Main St., open Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Sunday
  • Knox County YMCA, 1324 W. Carl Sandburg Drive, open Friday 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • The Knox County Housing Authority Overnight Shelter, 525/527 Iowa Court, available daily 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Safety tips include staying hydrated, wearing loose, light-colored clothing, eating small meals, avoiding strenuous activity, and staying indoors. “Plan ahead and stay hydrated,” the agency urges, advising against alcohol and caffeine.
