Larry Dean Fones, 72, of Knoxville, Illinois, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025.
Larry was born January 10, 1953, in Galesburg, the son of Frederick D. and Dorothy J. (Larson) Fones. He married Lourdes Angela Rodriguez on September 26, 1975, in East Galesburg. Larry is survived by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Lourdes; two daughters, Amy Fones of Oquawka, Illinois, and Jessica (Jason) Bravender of Whitleyville, Tennessee; one son, Frederick Fones of Gilson, Illinois; two brothers, Danny (Vicky) Gabriel of Oneida, Illinois and Donnie (Linda) Gabriel of Abingdon, Illinois; and one sister, Cindy (Mike) Fox of Andover, Illinois. Larry is also survived by six grandchildren, Lacie Hengl, Jonathon Hengl, Skyler Orozco, Sierra Orozco, Daniel Bravender, and Dalton Bravender; and nine great grandchildren. Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Gabriel.
Larry worked as a union painter for several years before starting Fones Drywall which he owned and operated for over 40 years. An avid outdoorsman, Larry loved to go hunting, from squirrels and deer to rabbits with his Beagles. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time on the Mississippi and waterskiing. Larry was a friend to many including many close friends at his hangout, the 7th Ward Tap. He loved his dogs including his German Shepherd, Bear. He was a good man, good husband, and good dad. He was always there when you needed him the most and was not shy in showing his love to those in his company.
Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg with a funeral service at 5 p.m. Pastor Jordan Knight will officiate. Friends and family are invited to the 7th Ward Tap, 553 E. Brooks St., Galesburg, Illinois following the memorial service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
