The Prairie and Simmons streets intersection reopened to traffic Wednesday, marking a key milestone in an ongoing downtown revitalization project that began in March.
The west half of the Simmons Street parking lot is expected to reopen soon, while the next phase will see the closure of the east half and the Kellogg Street intersection to continue improvements.
The Prairie Street intersection will operate with temporary stop signs until traffic signals are installed, part of a staged plan to avoid simultaneous closures and maintain partial parking access downtown.

The $2.5 million project, funded by a $2,082,500 Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant and approximately $400,000 in local funds, includes streetscape enhancements on Simmons Street such as ADA-compliant sidewalks, curb upgrades, storm sewer improvements, asphalt resurfacing, landscaping, benches, trash receptacles, and decorative lighting.
The adjacent parking lot will feature a reconstructed asphalt surface, curb upgrades, landscaping, a pedestrian canopy, and decorative lighting. Construction is set to continue through the season, with completion expected by October 2025.
“We appreciate the patience of citizens while the improvements are underway,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works. “When completed, the project will be a significant improvement to our downtown, and we are grateful for the Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Street Grant, which made this project possible.”
