Worker freed from grain bin in Fulton County rescue

A worker trapped in a grain bin was freed after a coordinated rescue operation Wednesday in Fulton County.

Rescue personnel responded to a call about a worker trapped in a grain bin at 1530 E. Hart Road in Marietta just after noon Wednesday.

The Smithfield Fire Department requested mutual aid from the Macomb Fire Department at 12:01 p.m., with additional technical rescue teams from Canton and Quincy called en route.

At 12:23 p.m., first responders found the worker submerged in corn up to his chin. Grain was removed through the bin door, and a relief cut was made to lower the grain level. By 12:32 p.m., additional teams arrived, performing another relief cut to reach the conscious and alert worker. He was extracted by 12:57 p.m. and transferred to LifeFlight for medical care.

Authorities emphasized grain bin safety, urging farmers to follow key precautions: never enter alone, shut off equipment, use a safety harness, test air quality, avoid crusted grain, watch for flowing grain, post warnings, and stay trained to prevent such incidents.
