National WIC Breastfeeding Week kicks off in Galesburg with community push

In recognition of National WIC Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7, the Knox County Health Department is joining the USDA’s efforts to promote the benefits of breastfeeding and support local families.

The week highlights the vital role of WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) programs in empowering breastfeeding mothers by addressing societal barriers, enhancing peer counseling, and fostering community partnerships. Breast milk, recognized as the best nutrition for a baby’s first year, helps reduce illnesses and healthcare costs.

WIC, a supplemental nutrition program, serves pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5, offering enhanced food packages, breastfeeding education, and nutritional support. To further assist families, the Health Department is developing a Google Map of breastfeeding-friendly locations in Knox County, including businesses with designated “mothers’ rooms,” quiet spaces, or air-conditioned stops where families can comfortably breastfeed or pump.

Local businesses are invited to join this initiative by registering as supportive spots—welcoming breastfeeding families, even non-customers—via an online form at www.knoxcountyhealth.org.

For more information on WIC, breastfeeding support, or to add a location to the map, visit www.knoxcountyhealth.org or call (309) 344-2224.
