Galvan, Susan Schwass

Susan Schwass Galvan, 63, of Lake Warren, Monmouth, IL, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, IA.  

She was born on November 16, 1961, in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of Don G. and Patty J. (Guilinger) Schwass.  Susan was raised and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Warren High School in 1979.  She later continued her education at the Chicago City College and the University of Maryland.  

Susan proudly served in the United States Army for 18 years as a Supply Sergeant, including active duty during Operation Desert Storm. Throughout her military career, she exemplified the highest values of duty, honor, and unwavering service to her country, dedicating nearly two decades to protecting and supporting her fellow soldiers.

Susan married Armando Galvan on July 30, 1995, at Lake Warren, Monmouth, IL; he survives.  

After retiring from the United States Army, Susan spent several fulfilling years working at Hend-Co Hills Golf Course in Biggsville. In addition to her work there, she ran a highly successful eBay resale business, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit. Susan had a deep love for the outdoors; she enjoyed fishing, traveling, and took great joy in feeding and caring for local wildlife. A passionate sports fan, she proudly supported the Chicago Bears and the Texas Longhorns.  

Surviving Susan is her husband, Armando Galvan of Monmouth, IL; her step children, Armando (Patti) Galvan, Jr. of Harlingen, TX, Annette (Anthony) Gibson of Texas, Amanda “Jessica” (Rick) Mendez of Harlingen, TX, Andrew Derick (Jenifer) Galvan of Huston, TX; eight grandchildren; Two brothers, Jim (Lorraine) Schwass of Pattonsburg, IL and Les (Rita) Schwass of Lake Warren, IL; one sister, Janice (Kenny) Koehler of Mendon, IL; her sisters-in-law, Linda Schwass of Burlington, IA, Nelda Cerrillo of McAllen, TX, Velma Valdez of Mission, TX, Lolly Galvan of Harlingen, TX, Cookie Galvan of Harlingen, TX, Diana Galvan of Harlingen, TX; one aunt, Sharon Guilinger of Savannah, IL;  and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roy Schwass; one granddaughter, Ceirra Erickson; and three brothers-in-law, Pete Galvan, Rudy Galvan, and Eloy Galvan.

Funeral services with Military Honors will be at 11 a.m., Friday, August 22, 2025, at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL.  Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.  Memorials can be made to American Legion Post 136 or Jamieson Center in Monmouth.  McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
