Galesburg City Council approves YMCA Grant, pickleball courts, and fire station demolition

The Galesburg City Council approved a $900,000 grant to the Knox County YMCA, eight pickleball courts at Rotary Park, and the demolition of the former Maple Avenue fire station during a marathon meeting Monday night.

The nearly three hour meeting was extended by 53 minutes of public comment, with residents primarily focusing on the YMCA grant and pickleball project.

A 5-2 vote passed the $900,000 grant for a $1.9 million childcare and teen lounge project at the Knox County YMCA, 1324 W. Carl Sandburg Drive. Sixth Ward Alderman Dwight White and Second Ward Alderman Wendel Hunigan voted no, with White’s motion to delay the vote until the next meeting rejected 4-3.

The council also approved a $547,618 bid for eight pickleball courts at Rotary Park, up from six, omitting lighting to address resident concerns and save costs. The vote was 5-1-1, with Sixth Ward Alderman Greg Saul voting no and White abstaining.
