The 54th Annual National Stearman Fly-In will bring vintage aviation to life at Harrel W. Timmons Galesburg Regional Airport from Sept. 1-6. The event celebrates the Stearman biplane, a WWII-era aircraft renowned for training pilots and its later role as a crop duster, drawing pilots and enthusiasts nationwide to Galesburg.

A Week of Aviation and Community

The Fly-In features daily fly-outs, seminars, and contests. Community Day on Saturday, September 6, is a standout, kicking off with the Dawn Patrol Flight Breakfast from 7-11 a.m., hosted by the Galesburg Noon Lions Club. For $10 for adults and $7 for children under 12, attendees can savor an all-you-can-eat feast of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee, milk, and orange juice while watching planes launch at 6:35 a.m. The day continues with children’s activities, a formation flying contest, and the Annual Banquet with a silent auction, catered by Patton Block Grill & Brew Pub.

Economic and Cultural Impact

The Fly-In is a major boost for Galesburg, with visitors supporting local hotels, restaurants, and caterers. Nearly 200 volunteers ensure the event’s success. Around 80 Stearman biplanes are expected, weather permitting.

A Unique Flying Experience

Stearmans, with fabric-covered wings and steel frames, fly at 80-110 mph, offering a “seat-of-your-pants” experience, per Phillip Wolford, vice president of the Stearman Fly-In.

Tips for Visitors

Admission and parking are free, with narrated tram rides at $1. Saturday’s Community Day is ideal for families, especially with the Dawn Patrol Breakfast’s affordable, hearty menu. Food vendors will be on-site all week. Visit stearmanflyin.com for the full schedule, and as Wolford says, “Look up—they’re flying all the time!”
