One Percent Better, LLC, the company behind the popular local coffee business Orange Cup, is set to transform the facade of 331-337 E. Main St. with a vibrant renovation to open its new venture, Orange Cup Sidecar – Bagels · Breads · Bevies, in the former Black Market Bagels space.
The Facade Advisory Committee approved the company’s grant application on Tuesday, with the proposal now headed to the Galesburg City Council for final approval on Sept. 15. The $31,731.48 project includes painting the metal facade, installing a circular perpendicular sign and replacing the existing awning with one spanning the full sidewalk frontage. Orange Cup is eligible for up to $15,865.74 through the city’s Downtown Facade Redevelopment Grant Program.
Melany Baldwin, co-owner of Orange Cup with her husband Scott Baldwin, told WGIL the project will bring a “bright, welcoming style” to downtown Galesburg, featuring a colorful sunburst mural designed to spark smiles. “Everyone we’ve shared it with has had an immediate smile reaction,” Baldwin said. “That’s what we hope for in every customer interaction.”
Construction is slated to begin Sept. 17, with completion expected by Oct. 15, and the shop opening the first week of October. The project will create three full-time and seven to 10 part-time jobs, boosting local employment. Sarah Baldwin, the Baldwins’ daughter, will serve as head baker, leading the creation of the shop’s offerings.
The renovation, designed by Streamline Architects in collaboration with landlord Bob Bondi of Bondi Building Corp., aims to unify the block and enhance downtown’s appeal. Local contractor Painting Pros, led by Doug Alderman, will handle the facade painting, including the mural, while Galesburg Signs will install the sign. RA Awnings of Metamora won the bid for the new awning, replacing a torn one to improve storefront visibility.
“We’re proud of Galesburg and we give back to Galesburg,” Melany Baldwin said in a project narrative. “This will help elevate and unify the block.” She added, “The exterior is one giant element, the cool inside is another — but the heart of it all is Sarah and her passion for people, creative food and fun.”
Orange Cup Sidecar will fill the void left by Black Market Bagels, which closed in April 2025, offering fresh-baked bagels, artisan breads, pastries, coffee and specialty drinks in a revitalized space.
