Second arrest made in Abingdon convenience store stabbing

A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a stabbing at a convenience store in Abingdon, with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office continuing to investigate the August 30, incident for possible additional suspects.

Jacob A. Smith, 22, of Abingdon, was arrested on a warrant and charged with three Class 3 felonies: aggravated battery to a physically handicapped individual, aggravated battery in a public place, and possession of less than 5 grams of methamphetamine. Smith was transported to the Knox County Jail, where he is being held without pretrial release conditions.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. at A-Town Gas, located at 401 N. Monroe St. Deputies responded to reports of a stabbing and found a male victim, who was transported for emergency medical treatment. The initial suspect, George A. Hamblen, 46, of Abingdon, was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with three counts of aggravated battery, including great bodily harm, use of a deadly weapon, and battery in a public place, all Class 3 felonies. Hamblen was identified through surveillance footage and witness statements and remains in custody at the Knox County Jail.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that the case remains under active investigation, with authorities reviewing evidence for the potential involvement of additional suspects. No further details about the victim’s condition or the circumstances of the incident have been released.
