The Simmons Street and adjacent city parking lot revitalization project is on track for completion this fall, bringing major upgrades to downtown Galesburg with the support of a $2.1 million Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant.

Since breaking ground on March 31, the project has made significant progress, with most of Simmons Street, the Prairie Street intersection, and the west half of the parking lot completed. Storm sewer upgrades and decorative lighting are also finished.

In the coming weeks, crews will complete the Kellogg Street intersection, curb and gutter work, and ADA-compliant sidewalks. By mid-September, concrete work will conclude, followed by final grading of the east parking lot and asphalt preparation. Asphalt paving is set for late September, with a 10-day curing period before pavement markings are added in early October, when the roadway and parking lot will reopen to traffic. Final landscaping and site furnishings, including benches and trash receptacles, will wrap up by the end of October.

The revitalization project is located on Simmons Street between Prairie Street and Kellogg Street and the adjacent City parking lot at 235 E. Simmons,.

The $2.5 million project includes new asphalt for the roadway and parking lot, ADA-compliant sidewalks, improved storm sewers, curbs, and gutters, as well as landscaping, tree planting, a pedestrian canopy, and decorative lighting.

“The City of Galesburg is truly grateful for the Rebuild Illinois grant that made this project possible,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works. “We appreciate the patience of our residents while the improvements have been underway and look forward to seeing these improvements create a more vibrant and accessible downtown for years to come.”

The project, funded by the $2.08 million grant and $400,000 in local funds, was completed by Gunther Construction and managed by City Project Manager Jamie West. View project details and a rendering on the City of Galesburg’s interactive map at www.galesburg.com.
