The City of Galesburg Fire Department will begin its annual fire hydrant testing and flushing program starting Tuesday, Sept. 9. The program is expected to last three weeks, with work taking place Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4p.m., as weather permits.
This essential maintenance work helps ensure fire hydrants are in proper working order with sufficient water flow for fire emergencies. The process also helps improve water quality by flushing out mineral and sediment buildup from the water mains, which can reduce bacterial growth and control corrosion.
Crews will test hydrants in the southeast quadrant of the city.
During the testing, residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure or slight discoloration. This is normal and a result of the flushing process. Water service will not be interrupted. Motorists are advised to use caution when driving near crews and their vehicles and to be aware of possible water accumulation in the streets.
