Nominee selected for Ward 1 seat on Galesburg Council. Meet the 8 who applied

A chef and founder of the nonprofit CommunityGro, tabbed a free fresh food network, is under consideration to fill the vacant Ward 1 seat on the Galesburg City Council.

Angelica Mangieri has confirmed to WGIL that she is the nominee selected by Mayor Peter Schwartzman to replace outgoing Alderman Bradley Hix.

Mangieri expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited and honored to be nominated for Ward 1 Council Member. At this stage, it’s only a nomination, but I’m grateful for the opportunity and for the support I’ve received. If approved, I’m looking forward to continuing to listen, learn, and collaborate to serve our community as the process moves forward.”

Mangieri, a chef by trade, told WGIL she is passionate about cooking and creating new food ways and accessibility for Galesburg through her work with CommunityGro. She was also owner of the former GloBar Juice and Smoothie in downtown Galesburg.

Angelica Mangieri was one of eight Ward 1 residents who applied for the position. Schwartzman told WGIL on Monday that he planned to submit a nomination letter to the City Council on Tuesday, with the appointment expected on the Sept. 15 agenda, typically released on Thursday. The applicants were:
  • Pamella Bess-Tabb
  • Jeffrey Gomer
  • Sue Hulett
  • Anthony Law
  • Angelica Mangieri
  • Katie New
  • Bill Sime
  • Tara Wilder

Schwartzman previously pointed out that the candidates bring a variety of professional backgrounds, including academic roles, food industry experience, and other local employment.

He emphasized the need for a candidate who “(1) has a history of community engagement and connection (2) has a working knowledge of City government (and current events).”

The vacancy occurred after Hix, who served since 2019, resigned at the end of August due to a move outside ward boundaries, as reported by WGIL.

Under city statute, Schwartzman has 60 days from the vacancy—until late October—to nominate a Ward 1 resident, with the Council required to approve within 30 days. If the first nominee is rejected, a second can be proposed with another 30-day approval window; if both fail, Schwartzman can appoint temporarily from the two candidates until approval or the next election.
