Field fire forces road closures near Rio in Knox County

A large field fire has prompted the closure of two Knox County highways near the village of Rio on Sunday afternoon, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

The affected roadways include Knox Highway 33 from Knox Highway 34 to Rio, and Knox Highway 2 from U.S. Highway 150 north to Rio. Emergency responders are actively battling the blaze, which was first reported sending plumes of smoke visible across fields between Knox Road 200 East and Knox Road 100 East around 2:20 p.m. Officials urge drivers to avoid the area to ensure safe access for firefighting crews from the Rio Fire Protection District and surrounding departments.
