Eugene W. “Gene” Royer, age 85 of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 6:23 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois.
Gene was born on June 11, 1940, in Galesburg, Illinois the son of Chester “C.B.” and Katherine (Milroy) Royer. He attended and graduated from ROVA High School. He married Janice Nelson on February 14, 1980, in Galesburg, Illinois.
Surviving is his beloved wife, Janice Royer of Galesburg, Illinois; three children: Lorri (Joe) Dikeman of Maquon, Illinois, Jeff (Pattie) Royer of Springfield, Missouri, and Dawn Miyler of Fairfax, Iowa; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Susan (Keith) Swanson of Victoria, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon (Harry) Howater.
Gene built a life rooted in hard work and dedication. As the proud owner of Gene Royer Farm Drainage business, with his long-time employees, Don Asbury and Bill Fleisher, he spent his day outdoors doing what he loved; working with his hands, helping others, and building something lasting. He was a true craftsman with wood and metal. Gene also had his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. His strong work ethic and honesty earned him the respect of farmers, neighbors and friends across the community.
When the work was done, Gene could often be found enjoying life’s true treasures: time with his beloved wife Janice, rides on this Harley Davidson, traveling the country, and evenings spent playing guitar and piano with friends. Music was one of his greatest joys – a way to laugh, relax, and connect with people he cared about most.
He will be remembered for his generous heart, genuine smile, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. To know him was to love him, and his memory will live on through the stories, songs, and friendships he leaves behind.
He was a member of the Victoria United Methodist Church and the Knoxville Masonic Pacific Lodge 66 A.F. & A.M.
Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services at this time, per Gene’s wishes. Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice in Galesburg.
