Streaks punch four tickets to girls state swim meet, including record-setting relay win

The Galesburg High School girls swimming and diving team advanced four entries to the IHSA State Finals after competing Saturday at the Pekin Sectional, where the Silver Streaks placed second with 226 points behind Metamora (243 points).

Senior Lily Furrow qualified in the 50-yard freestyle (24.02, second place) and 100-yard freestyle (52.11, second place). Senior Hayden Johnson qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.12, second place).

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Macie Nelson, sophomore Faith Warren, Johnson, and Furrow won the event in 3:36.65 and set a new Galesburg school record, earning a state berth.

Galesburg also finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.94) with freshman Camdyn Miller, Johnson, Furrow, and Nelson.

Additional top results included Nelson’s second place in the 100 backstroke (1:00.65), Warren’s fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:59.82) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:22.63), and Johnson’s third in the 200 individual medley (2:12.33).

Retiring Galesburg coach Ray Van Hootegem was named sectional coach of the year.

The state finals will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15, at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont.
