The Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce honored Mark Thomas today with the 2025 Thomas B. Herring Community Service Award during its 47th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon at Cedar Creek Hall.

The award, named for Galesburg’s second city manager who served 18 years, recognizes individuals who exemplify humility, sincerity, and an unwavering commitment to the community. It was presented to Thomas by Sue Dutell, the 2024 recipient.

A third-generation Galesburg native, Thomas returned home after earning his Bachelor of Arts to build a life rooted in public service. He began his career as a deputy coroner in 1998 and served five terms as Knox County Coroner, retiring in late 2024 after 20 years in the role. Known for his compassion and professionalism, he supported countless families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Along with his wife Tricia, Thomas owns and operates Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and recently expanded by purchasing Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. His involvement extends across the community through leadership roles with the Ambulance Board, the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Crimestoppers, the YMCA, cemetery boards, and Elks Lodge #894.

“Mark truly reflects the spirit of this award,” said Pam Gaither, Executive Director of the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce. “He shows up with integrity, authenticity, and a true love for this community. He never does anything for attention — he simply helps people because it’s who he is.”

Today’s luncheon also featured the 2025 State of the City Address from City Manager Eric Hanson (full speech here) and a keynote presentation from Jeannie Weber with United Way of West Central Illinois.
