The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 135 Sumner St. early Monday morning, containing the blaze to the attic with no injuries reported.
Fire units from all three Galesburg stations were dispatched at 4:34 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the two-story home. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke inside the residence. Firefighters from Central Station forced entry and pulled ceilings on the second floor, locating and extinguishing the fire in the attic.
All residents and their pets safely self-evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Due to the early-hour call and the commitment of all on-duty personnel, the department initiated an emergency callback of off-duty firefighters to maintain emergency coverage for the remainder of the city.
Fire investigators have ruled the cause unintentional.
The Galesburg Fire Department reminds residents to check smoke alarms regularly and to have a working carbon monoxide detector on every level of the home, especially during the heating season.
