Galesburg Mayor Peter Schwartzman looked back on a year of significant progress and challenges while outlining an ambitious vision for 2026 in a year-end interview on WGIL’s Galesburg’s Morning News.
The mayor emphasized economic growth and community initiatives as 2025 highlights, addressed governance transitions from council turnover, and detailed his bold goal to essentially eradicate homelessness in the city next year.
2025 Accomplishments and Reflections
Schwartzman highlighted strong private investments totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, new job creation (over 550 positions), business expansions, and community pride boosts. He expressed pride in the city’s momentum and collaborative spirit that drove these wins.
Council Turnover and Governance
- Two council members – Bradley Hix and Evan Miller – stepped down in 2025.
- This marked the mayor’s fourth vacancy to fill during his tenure.
- Four current council members now have less than a year of experience.
- Schwartzman noted the non-partisan nature of the seats and said he’s focused on fostering collaboration to maintain continuity and effective long-term planning.
Local Tourism and Economic Success
- The viral popularity and second location of Judy’s Family Cafe boosted community morale and drew visitors.
- The city hired a new tourism director to build on successes like Judy’s and promote Galesburg’s attractions more effectively.
Community Center Project Update
- The long-discussed center gained momentum with a new direction in August 2025.
- The city is partnering with Project Now for a south-side facility.
- Focus is on recreation and essential community services.
- Funding combines city resources and grants.
- Schwartzman expressed optimism for further progress in 2026.
Homelessness: The Central 2026 Priority
Schwartzman described homelessness as a growing challenge but noted 2025 gains in shelter funding and provider coordination. His multi-pronged plan for 2026 includes:
- A 100-day challenge in partnership with Project Now to assess needs and coordinate efforts.
- Expanded shelters with on-site mental health workers and job/housing placement assistance.
- Bolstered rental inspections to ensure safe living conditions.
- New incentives for building or renovating rental properties and homes.
- Improved transportation options for odd-hour shifts to help working individuals.
- Reliable food availability at shelters.
The mayor urged community members and businesses to contribute financially and discussed balancing public safety concerns (especially around the library) with compassionate responses.
Christmas Wish List for Galesburg
When asked for the top two “gifts” he’d wish for the city, Schwartzman shared forward-looking aspirations tied to continued growth and community well-being.
