
Elbert Leon Kimbrough, a Galesburg native and legendary athlete whose accomplishments helped put the city on the map, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, at his home in Eldridge, Iowa. He was 87.
Born March 24, 1938, Kimbrough and his identical twin brother, Albert, starred in multiple sports at Galesburg High School in the 1950s, earning all-state honors in football, basketball and track. The brothers were key members of the undefeated 1956 football team and the 1956-57 basketball squad that reached the Elite Eight. Elbert went on to Northwestern University, where he earned All-Big Ten and All-American recognition as a standout receiver before enjoying a seven-year professional career in the NFL.
The Kimbrough twins’ legacy in Galesburg was further cemented in 2025 when the fieldhouse at Galesburg Junior/Senior High School was officially named the Albert and Elbert Kimbrough Fieldhouse. The dedication featured signage, a mural depicting the brothers in their Silver Streaks uniforms, and displays of memorabilia from their careers. Family members at the unveiling described the twins as inseparable best friends who served as educators, mentors and role models long after their playing days.
Elbert’s death comes less than two years after Albert passed away in May 2024 at age 86.

Albert and Elbert Kimbrough lived lives that inspired many, many people. At Galesburg High School, they were two of the all-time best athletes. They went onto excel athletically after graduating. They continued to be leaders and role models throughout their life’s. May they both rest in peace.

1957 Silver Streak Elite 8 Team
The 1957 Silver Streaks lost to Collinsville in the Elite 8. The team started four African-Americans.
1957- Galesburg 23 Rock Island 21
Many consider this to be the greatest game in Galesburg history. The Kimbroughs and the Streaks upset Don Nelson and the Rock Island Rocks.
