Knox County man arrested after allegedly killing dog, possessing firearms as felon

A Wataga man was arrested Saturday after Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated reports he shot and killed his dog and possessed firearms as a convicted felon.

Jon P. Benson, 50, faces multiple charges following the execution of a search warrant at his residence Sunday, Jan. 4.

Deputies responded to a well-being call after information indicated Benson allegedly killed the dog the previous day and had firearms despite his felony status.

During the search, deputies located multiple firearms, a deceased dog and drug paraphernalia. Benson was taken into custody without incident.

Benson was charged with five counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm, disorderly conduct and violation of the Humane Care for Animals Act.

He was transported to the Knox County Jail and processed.
