Former Monmouth mayor, longtime public servant David Sharp dies at 75

Former Monmouth Mayor and longtime public servant David M. Sharp died Tuesday at Allure of Knox County in Galesburg. He was 75.

Sharp served on the Monmouth City Council for 25 years and was mayor from 1993 to 1997.

A 1968 Monmouth High School graduate and 1973 Monmouth College alumnus with a degree in English, Sharp held a variety of roles serving the community. He worked as a police officer and EMT in Monmouth, an investigator for DCFS and the Illinois Secretary of State, and at the Secretary of State’s driver’s license facility in Monmouth before retiring in 2012.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Monmouth and the Monmouth Lions Club.

According to his obituary, Sharp enjoyed fast motorsports, Firebirds, motorcycles and mowing lawns — his own and his neighbors’. He had a collection of firearms and enjoyed shooting. Known for his open heart, Sharp became legal guardian to several local children in need.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the funeral home.
