Galesburg expands housing repair assistance program, applications now open

Applications are now open for the City of Galesburg’s expanded Local Housing Repair Assistance Program.

The program, launched in 2022, has helped more than 100 home repair projects. City Council approved updates in December, increasing maximum funding to $5,000 per project and expanding eligibility to include registered renter-occupied single-family homes.

New eligible repairs focus on exterior maintenance visible from public ways, such as siding, windows, tuckpointing and painting.

“This program has been a vital tool for providing support for our residents in a way that positively impacts their lives and the community,” Associate Planner Lucas Brooks said in a release. “By broadening the program’s reach to include more exterior repairs, we can help more residents complete essential improvements that enhance their quality of life and the neighborhood’s character. Enhancing our housing and neighborhoods remains a top priority, and this program has proven to be a wise investment in furthering that goal.”

The grants target low- to moderate-income single-family homes within city limits. Additional funding up to $1,000 per project is available through CBI Bank & Trust via the Galesburg Community Foundation for qualifying applicants.

Eligible activities include accessibility improvements, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, demolition of small unsafe structures, HVAC replacement (15+ years old), siding/windows, electrical/plumbing repairs and minor roof work. A complete list and FAQ are available on the city’s website.

Household income must be under 80 percent of area median (e.g., $69,300 for a family of four in 2025 HUD guidelines). Applicants need proof of income/assets, ownership or lease, current utility payments and two contractor estimates.

Applications are available at City Hall’s Community Development Department or online via the citizen request center at www.ci.galesburg.il.us.

More information is on the Housing Repair Assistance Program page.

Funding is limited and awarded until exhausted. Homeowners cover 5 percent of costs and any overage.
