Galesburg launches required survey to protect public water supply

City of Galesburg

Galesburg water customers are being asked to help protect the public drinking water supply by completing a quick backflow prevention survey mailing out Jan. 16.

The survey, required every three years by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, audits potential health hazards from individual plumbing systems that could contaminate the municipal water supply. While uncommon, some components — such as lawn irrigation systems, hot water boilers, swimming pool fills, wet fire protection systems or secondary water sources like wells or ponds — may need backflow prevention devices to stop reversed flow from carrying contaminants back into public lines.

The brief survey identifies any such risks so the city can maintain safe drinking water for everyone. Customers will receive a postcard from Aqua Backflow with instructions: scan the QR code or visit TrackMyBackflow.com and enter the unique site ID provided. Completion takes only a few moments, is free and must be done within 30 days of receipt.

Aqua Backflow, contracted by the City of Galesburg and based in Elgin, administers the backflow program and handles questions. Property owners who need backflow protection may receive follow-up compliance notices directly from the company for testing, repairs or installations — contact them at 847-742-2296 or info@aquabackflow.com.

Backflow preventers, if required, are the customer’s property and responsibility. Owners must arrange annual testing and any needed maintenance with a licensed, certified plumber — most local plumbers are qualified for this work.

The Galesburg Cross Connection Control Program follows IEPA regulations to eliminate existing cross connections and prevent future ones, safeguarding public health and the integrity of the municipal water supply. Timely cooperation with the survey and any follow-ups helps ensure these standards are met for the community.
