Galesburg Mayor Peter Schwartzman received three complete applications to fill the Ward 3 City Council vacancy left by Evan Miller, who stepped down in December after moving out of the ward boundaries.
The applicants are Steve Fawer, Chuck Reynolds, and Mike Nache.
The deadline to apply was Jan. 15.
Schwartzman tells WGIL he is reviewing the applications this week. No further interviews are expected. He plans to announce his nomination by the end of this week, “assuming that I don’t ask for another round of applications (given the small number of applicants).”
Under city ordinance, Schwartzman has 60 days from the vacancy to nominate a replacement for Miller, with the council required to approve within 30 days. If the first nominee is rejected, a second is proposed with another 30-day window; if both fail, he can appoint temporarily from the two candidates until approval or the next election.
The process is similar to last year, when the mayor nominated a replacement for Ward 1 after Bradley Hix resigned to move outside ward boundaries. Angelica Mangieri was unanimously elected as the new Ward 1 council member for the Galesburg City Council during Sept. 15, 2025, meeting.
The mayor previously outlined what he looks for in a Ward 3 council member, saying the representative should have a history of community engagement and connection, plus a working knowledge of city government and current events.
