
A longtime area doctor who delivered more than 15,000 babies over his career has died.
Dr. Raoul E. Reinertsen, 89, of Galesburg, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, at Seminary Manor Nursing Home after a brief illness.
Reinertsen practiced as an OB-GYN for decades, first at The Coleman Clinic in Canton from 1969 to 1984, then at The Galesburg Clinic from 1984 to 1994, and finally at Western Illinois University Beu Health Center in Macomb until retiring in 2000.
“Throughout his medical career as an OB-GYN, he welcomed over 15,000 babies, never losing the joy of witnessing each new life,” the obituary states.
Born March 20, 1936, in Canton, Reinertsen graduated from Canton High School in 1954, Augustana College in 1958, and the University of Chicago with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1962. He completed his internship and residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy.

He married Anita Morrell on Sept. 15, 1956, in Canton. She survives, along with children David A. (Karen) Reinertsen, Jean A. (Kevin) Anderson, Peter J. (Ellen) Reinertsen, and Julie D. Reinertsen; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Reinertsen enjoyed international travel and Airstream trailer caravans with his wife after retirement, played euphonium in several bands, volunteered in the community, and was known for his unique sense of humor. He was a member of the Illinois State Medical Association, Sunrise Rotary of Galesburg, Canton American Legion, and an Eagle Scout.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
