Judy’s Family Cafe — the viral pancake destination that put Galesburg on the map — is closed for up to 30 days while the original North Broad Street location undergoes a complete transformation, inside and out.
Judy’s Family Cafe will be open one final day for breakfast Tuesday, March 10, before closing for the transformation. Starting Wednesday, March 11, breakfast moves to Judy’s Kitchen at 51 N. Prairie St. in downtown Galesburg. Judy’s Kitchen will serve breakfast starting at 6 a.m., seven days a week. The restaurant will also be open for lunch and dinner, closing at 9 p.m.
Owner Judy Wang shut the doors at 1195 N. Broad St. on Monday, March 9, as work crews moved in. The project — designed by Streamline Architects of Moline and managed by Estes Construction — is a top-to-bottom overhaul of the building Wang now owns outright.
“She was always hesitant at first to make changes to the building because she wasn’t the owner,” said Victor Dantas, co-owner of Judy’s Family Brands and Judy’s pancake mix, in an exclusive interview with WGIL. “Now she is.”
What’s changing
The transformation touches nearly every surface of the building — floors, walls, ceilings, bathrooms, and kitchen. The exterior will be fully repainted. Pergolas will be added along the Fremont Street side for outdoor seating, with external heaters planned for use in colder months. New concrete is already being poured in that area.
Seating capacity will grow from roughly 70 to approximately 82 seats, with additional capacity coming from the expanded outdoor area. Inside, Judy’s branding colors will be incorporated into the design, along with new wallpaper and fresh materials throughout — though the full interior look is being kept under wraps until reopening.
“We want people to go there as soon as we open again,” Dantas said.
The bathrooms will receive a full overhaul — new sinks, toilets, flooring, and ceilings. The kitchen will also be renovated.
A rendering of the exterior is posted in front of the cafe for passersby to preview the new look.
Live from Judy’s Kitchen every Saturday

Starting soon, Judy’s Kitchen will broadcast a live cooking demonstration on its social media channels every Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Judy will be live in the kitchen, and any special guests on hand will also be interviewed during the broadcast.
Franchising on the horizon
The transformation is about more than fresh paint and new floors. Dantas told WGIL the long-term goal is to franchise the Judy’s Cafe brand — and the renovated original location will serve as the model.
“The real plan is to franchise Judy’s,” Dantas said. “For that to happen, we need the package — a franchise model where the next investor and new locations will have clear processes on how to open a new Judy’s.”
The second Judy’s Cafe location is planned for Aledo, Illinois. After the Galesburg transformation is complete, Wang’s focus turns to getting that location established. Dantas said the team has received inquiries from mayors of small towns and representatives of larger cities interested in bringing Judy’s to their communities — but the priority now is building the franchise framework first.

The numbers behind the phenomenon
Judy’s went viral in August 2024. Since then, the brand has accumulated close to one million followers across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook combined, with total views surpassing one billion.
Dantas estimated that at least two families from out of state visit Judy’s every day, and that at least 5,000 people who had never previously visited Galesburg made the trip last year because of Judy’s.
In his 2025 State of the City address, Galesburg City Manager Eric Hanson declared Galesburg the “pancake capital of the world.” Read that story here.
