Galesburg City Council preview: FlixBus vote, City Hall repairs on tonight’s agenda

Galesburg City Manager Eric Hanson joined Galesburg’s Morning News earlier today to preview tonight’s Monday, April 6 City Council agenda. The full interview is below.

The council will vote tonight on a license agreement with FlixBus to restore intercity bus service to Galesburg. Hanson says the agreement fills a gap left by a previous carrier and gives residents who don’t drive another option for getting around the country. Amtrak remains the primary service at the Seminary Street depot, but Hanson said discussions continue about a future multi-modal transit center across the street.

The council will also consider nearly $89,000 for exterior masonry repairs at City Hall. Built in 1991, the building is reaching a maintenance lifecycle for its roof, HVAC, elevators, and electrical systems. The low bid came from Otto Baum Company of Morton. Two seal coating contracts totaling $350,000 for city streets and park roads are also on the agenda.

On first reading tonight — a speed limit reduction on South Lake Storey Road from 45 to 35 mph between Henderson Street and the campground. Knox County changed its ordinance in March and the signs are already up. The city ordinance change brings Galesburg in line with the county. Hanson said enforcement has been discussed, with trail construction expected to bring additional congestion to the area.

Also on first reading — the sale of 13 city-owned vacant lots, an annual process to return properties to the tax rolls and eliminate city maintenance costs.

Hanson said the city wrapped up the first quarter in solid financial shape. A mild winter kept the salt and overtime budgets in check, freeing up dollars for infrastructure reinvestment. He said major job-creating projects from 2024 and early 2025 are at full staff and operational, and the city is preparing for a busy summer construction season.
