Structure fire damages Monmouth home; two pets die

A Monmouth family returned home Monday evening to find their house uninhabitable after a structure fire caused major smoke and heat damage. Two pets died in the fire.

The Monmouth Fire Department responded to the scene at 407 E. Girard Ave. at 5:13 p.m. Ladder 40 and Engine 23 arrived to find a 1½-story home with smoke showing from the exterior.

The initial crew entered the home with an attack line and found fire on the first floor. The fire was knocked down within minutes of arrival while a primary search was completed. Off-duty crews arriving later secured water supply and completed a secondary search.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation by Monmouth Fire Department investigators.

Assisting agencies included the Monmouth Police Department, Warren County Dispatch Center, Warren County Sheriff’s Department, Woodard & Curran Water Department, Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service, 1-800-BOARDUP, and Ameren Illinois.
