Skeletal remains found at Kewanee park identified as man missing since 2022

The skeletal remains found at Northeast Park in Kewanee last week have been identified.

Henry County Coroner Melissa Watkins has confirmed the remains are those of Daniel J. Cernovich, 47. Cernovich was reported missing on Nov.18, 2022. Next of kin have been notified.

An autopsy conducted May 29 determined the near-complete skeletonized remains were those of an unidentified adult. A forensic anthropology examination is still pending.

Preliminary autopsy findings indicate there was no evidence of tool markings or intentional dismemberment, and no gross antemortem blunt force or penetrating trauma.

The remains were discovered May 27 when workers emptying a restroom waste holding tank at the north end of the park found what appeared to be a human skull.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kewanee Police Department at (309) 853-1911 and ask for the Investigations Division.
