Knox County tax collector warns: mailing your payment on July 1 may not be enough

The first installment of Knox County real estate taxes is due Wednesday, July 1 — and Knox County Treasurer and Collector Robin E. Davis has a specific warning for residents planning to mail their payments.

Dropping a payment envelope at the post office on the due date does not guarantee it will be postmarked that same day.

“Any payment processed with a July 2nd postmark or later will legally be considered late and must incur a mandatory 1.5% statutory penalty fee,” Davis said.

Because local post offices may not sort or stamp mail on the same day it is dropped off, Davis is urging residents to mail payments several days early or explicitly request a hand-canceled postmark at the post office counter.

Other payment options

For residents who want to avoid the mail entirely, Knox County offers several alternatives:

Courthouse drop boxes: Two secure drop boxes are located on the Courthouse grounds. Payments must be deposited by 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, to count as an on-time transaction.

Online or phone: Credit cards, debit cards, and e-checks are accepted online at payknoxcoil.us or by calling (309) 315-4760. Transactions must be completed before midnight on July 1 and are subject to a processing fee.

In-person: Payments can be made at the Treasurer’s Office at 200 S. Cherry St. in Galesburg between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or at any Knox County bank location, excluding Wells Fargo.

Taxpayers with questions can contact the Knox County Collector’s Office at (309) 345-3811.
