When Shawn Hickey took over Galesburg football in June 2024, 38 players showed up on day one. On June 1 this year, there were 80 — and this time, the coach says, the numbers are real.
Hickey joined Galesburg’s Morning News on Wednesday to preview a season that starts earlier than any in state history — and a program he says is finally built on reliable numbers.

Real numbers, not summer numbers
“Last year I had about 120 and then when we started only 60 that showed up,” Hickey said. “So this year was more reliable and I knew had a better pulse of what the kids were doing, who was going to play.”
Hickey credits multi-sport athletes, an in-school weight training class, a twice-weekly speed school open to all athletes, and coaches working in the junior high buildings. But he’s blunt about the other ingredient.
“Win. That’s what it comes down to,” Hickey said. “It has to get to a point where we’re able to change that. We have to get to a winning season.”
The earliest start ever
The IHSA expanded the playoff field for 2026, and to keep a nine-game schedule while finishing the state series by Thanksgiving, the season moved up a week. The change passed a statewide vote 290-245, and practice now opens Aug. 5.
With the change comes a new eligibility rule: every player must complete 12 days of on-field practice before the opener. With the Aug. 21 opener at Dunlap, Hickey said there’s no margin for spotty attendance.
“I’ve been trying to instill the kids, you know, understand we only have 12 days and it’s not going to be you can’t be hit and miss,” Hickey said. “If you’re hit and miss that first or second week, you’re not going to be eligible to play in the first game.”
Hickey plans to add Saturday practices as insurance, and noted the state moved the mandatory dead week from early August to the week of July 4 as part of the change.
Still no Week 4 opponent
Galesburg continues searching for a replacement after Alleman announced it will not field a varsity team this fall. The opening remains posted on the IHSA website, but Hickey said the timing makes it hard — most teams are in conference play by Week 4.
“I don’t want to look a senior in the eye and say, well, you know what, you don’t get nine games this year, you get eight,” Hickey said, adding the program wants a home game and won’t chase an opponent hours out of state.
Camps, cards, and a new video board
Junior high camp for incoming seventh and eighth graders runs two weeks starting Monday, July 20, at 5:30 p.m. on the old Van Dyke field next to the stadium. The Friday Night Lights youth camp for grades 1-6 runs Tuesday through Friday next week at 4:30 p.m., finishing under the stadium lights Friday night. Forms are on the District 205 website, and JFL registration will also be available at the camp.
The program’s discount card fundraiser ends Friday. Cards feature deals from local businesses including Jimmy’s Pizza, Innkeeper’s, Orange Cup, Hy-Vee, Sidetrax, Buffalo Wild Wings, Culver’s, and a buy-one-get-one green fee at Bunker Links. Cards are available from any player or through the school, and community members can also buy cards through the school to help a specific player reach sales incentives.
Fans will also notice something new at CBI Bank & Trust Stadium this fall: a video board is installed, with training on its full capabilities still to come.
“When you come out to a home football game, you’re getting more than just a football game,” Hickey said. “It’s the best ticket in town.”
The Streaks open Friday, Aug. 21 at Dunlap, with the home opener Friday, Aug. 28 against Limestone at CBI Bank Stadium. Every Silver Streaks game airs live on WGIL, as it has for nearly 70 years.
