Galesburg woman now charged with attempted murder in Iowa Court stabbing

A Galesburg woman accused of critically injuring another woman in an early morning stabbing this week now faces an attempted murder charge, the Knox County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed to WGIL.

Destiny N. Denniston, 29, was originally arrested on three aggravated battery charges following the Sept. 10 incident in the 500 block of Iowa Court. Court records now show a charge of attempt first degree murder as well.

Knox County State’s Attorney Ashley Worby said the additional charge came after investigators developed more evidence.

“After reviewing video evidence, witness statements, and the defendant’s own admissions, I charged Attempt First Degree Murder in addition to three different theories of Aggravated Battery — based on great bodily harm, a dangerous weapon, and location of the offense,” Worby said.

“The initial evidence amounted to Aggravated Battery charges; however, further investigation led to evidence that was crucial to showing the defendant’s specific intent.”

A detention hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14.

Galesburg police were dispatched to the 500 block of Iowa Court at approximately 1:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, for a disturbance involving a possible stabbing. Officers rendered aid to a 29-year-old woman who appeared critically injured. She was taken to OSF St. Mary Medical Center and later life flighted to a Peoria hospital.

Police identified Denniston as the suspect during the initial investigation. She fled on foot and was apprehended a short time later in the 300 block of Ohio Avenue, according to Galesburg Police Chief Kevin Legate. She was taken to the Knox County Jail.

Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call the Galesburg Police Department at (309) 343-9151.
