CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois Army National Guard soldier and his cousin accused of planning terrorist attacks to support the Islamic State group are due in court.
The 22-year-old guardsman, Hasan Edmonds, and his 29-year-old Jonas Edmonds have a status hearing on Wednesday at federal court in Chicago. The men are both U.S. citizens from Aurora and they pleaded not guilty last month.
A federal complaint says Jonas planned to attack an Illinois military facility while Hasan joined Islamic State fighters. It says Hasan vowed to bring “the flames of war” to America.
Federal agents in March arrested Hasan at a Chicago airport and Jonas at his suburban Chicago home.
Both are charged with conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State group. A conviction carries a maximum 15-year prison term.
